The National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) was officially launched in Tema by the Mayor of Tema Metropolitan Authority Ebi Bright, with training tools and equipment presented to master craftspersons and trainees under the initiative.
Speaking at the event, the mayor described the launch as a deeply personal milestone, noting that the programme formed the core of his campaign of hope. She said seeing it come to life in Tema demonstrated that promises backed by commitment and resources could translate into tangible opportunities for young people.
“The National Apprenticeship Programme responds to a real challenge, youth unemployment. These are not just statistics. In Tema, I see them in the faces of young men and women who come seeking direction, opportunity, and hope. This programme offers that direction.”
The mayor urged apprentices to view the tools received as start-up capital and an investment in their future while commending master craftspersons for offering their time and expertise, and encouraged trainees to maintain the equipment and use it to build sustainable livelihoods.
“Whether they choose employment or self-employment, the goal remains the same: sustainable income, dignity, and contribution to community development,” she added.
She expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for prioritising skills development and backing it with GHS 300 million in the 2025 budget, stating that “promises without budgets are just words; this programme has both.”
Appreciation was also extended to the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, the National Youth Authority, the Tema Metro Coordinating Director, Mr. Francis Mensah, Mr. Jones Klutse, Regional Coordinator of NAP, Mr. Decardi-Nelson Kenneth Amponsah, and other stakeholders who supported the programme’s rollout.
