Tourism Ministry schools GTDC staff on RTI responsibilities

Staff of the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) have received training on the Right to Information (RTI) Act as part of efforts to strengthen transparency and improve how the organisation handles public requests for information.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts held the sensitisation session on Wednesday, 3 December 2025, at the GTDC offices.

The session focused on helping staff understand their legal obligations under the RTI Act, 2019 (Act 989), and the processes they must follow when receiving and responding to information requests.

Leading the training was the Ministry’s Information Officer, Martha Kakra Donkor, who walked staff through the background of the law and the types of information that can be accessed from public institutions and government-funded private entities. She also explained the categories of information exempted under the Act and outlined the steps available for internal review when requests are denied, including escalation to the RTI Commission and, ultimately, the courts.

Ms Donkor encouraged staff to make practical use of the law, noting that legislation becomes meaningful only when citizens are aware of their rights and institutions fulfil their duties. Participants raised questions and shared suggestions on strengthening access to information within the tourism sector.

Staff described the training as timely and said it would help them better meet the demands of the law while reinforcing GTDC’s commitment to transparency.

The session was attended by GTDC CEO Prof Kobby Mensah, Deputy CEO for Finance and Administration Naomi Borley Alabi, Deputy CEO for Operations Felicity Nelson, and other senior staff.
