A 30-year-old trader has been jailed four years after defrauding a policewoman and 46 job seekers of more than GH¢308,000 in a fake recruitment scheme into the security services.
Joseph Diawuo, who lived at Dominase in the Ashanti Region, lured the police officer stationed at Airport Barracks in Accra into mobilizing applicants who were desperate to join the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Armed Forces.
The victims were charged between GH¢6,000 and GH¢10,000 each under the promise of securing protocol slots in the security agencies. Thirty-eight of them paid GH¢6,000 each, amounting to GH¢228,000, while eight others paid GH¢10,000 each, making up GH¢80,000.
To give his scheme some credibility, Diawuo reportedly organized medical examinations for all the applicants at a facility in Santasi in the Ashanti Region before disappearing and cutting off all contact with the police officer.
The matter was later reported to the police, leading to his arrest and prosecution. He has since been convicted and sentenced to four years in prison.
