Train Accident: Damage estimated at $2.1m

The Accra High Court has been informed that the damage to the Tema-Mpakadan train, which was involved in an accident, is estimated at $2,138,466.66.

Four accused persons are standing trial for causing damage to the train, which was expected to ply the Tema-Mpakadan railway line.

According to the prosecution, the accused persons, on the day of the accident, used a truck to transport concrete blocks from Juapong in the Volta Region to Abutia, also in the Volta Region.

After dispatching the blocks, they attempted to cross the railway line as a shortcut, but their truck got stuck after they packed stones on the rail line.

Unfortunately, the Railway Authority was conducting a test run of the train on the same rail line at the time, resulting in the collision and damage to the train.

The accused persons have been charged with four counts, including using a railway line in breach of the Railway Act, endangering persons in the train, using the railway line contrary to the Railway Act, and causing unlawful damage.

They have all pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been granted bail in the sum of GH¢200,000 with one surety to be justified.

The case has been adjourned to June 27.
