Trobu MP speaks out against attempts to remove Chief Justice from office

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Trobu Constituency, Gloria Owusu, has voiced strong objections to President John Dramani Mahama forwarding petitions to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

Madam Gloria Owusu described the decision as an unconstitutional step by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

In a Facebook post, the Trobu MP argued that the move threatens judicial independence and undermines progress in gender equity.

“The silence of many women activists is deafening,” she stated, emphasizing the need for action to protect the highest-ranked woman in the judiciary.

She vowed to lead the charge against any politically motivated attempt to remove the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkonno, citing the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act 2024 and Ghana’s commitment to achieving SDG 5 on gender equality.

“As a female Legislator and advocate for women’s rights, I will not remain quiet for the highest-ranked woman in our judiciary to be treated this way,” she declared.
