Police in Prestea have arrested two soldiers and two civilians after a failed robbery at a mining site on Sunday night.
According to the Western Regional Police Command, the four were part of a six-member gang that stormed the LongShine Mining Company Limited at Obouhu, a suburb of Prestea, between 10:30 and 11:00pm on September 28. The gang reportedly assaulted security guards at the facility and demanded access to the company’s gold storage room.
Two of the suspects managed to escape and are currently on the run, while the others were overpowered and arrested following swift intervention by police.
The four arrested suspects, including the two military personnel, have been transferred from the Prestea District Command to the Tarkwa Divisional Command for further investigation. Police also impounded a brand-new Toyota pickup with registration number GN 6116-25, which the suspects had rented for the operation.
Nhyiraba Kwadwo Owusu Aduomi, who spoke with some of the security guards on duty, reported that they were beaten and forced at gunpoint to lead the attackers to the gold room.
Mr Gideon Ofori, a tailings officer at the company, also confirmed details of the incident and expressed shock at the involvement of soldiers in the crime.
Police say a manhunt is underway to track down the two remaining suspects.
