Two suspects arrested over killings in Wa

The Upper West Regional Police have arrested two major suspects connected to a series of killings in the Wa Municipality since 2021, including the recent murder of a night watchman, Yahaya Issah, at Douri, a section of Wa.

The suspects are also linked to the murder of eleven people in 2022.

Police say the two suspects are connected to fifteen murder cases recorded at various locations in Wa.

According to the Regional Police Commander, ACP Francis Yiribaare, intense intelligence work led to the arrest of the suspects, identified as Sherif Abdulai, 30, and Mahama Lamin, 25, who are believed to be behind the killings.

The police said forensic analysis and credible intelligence on October 3 led to the arrest of Mahama Lamin. Following his interrogation, further revelations led to the arrest of the second suspect.

ACP Yiribaare disclosed that the Assembly Member and some community members at Dondoli, a suburb of Wa, assisted the police in arresting Sherif Abdulai, a cobbler and ex-convict.

A search conducted on Sherif Abdulai uncovered a Vivaon keypad mobile phone and an X-Base solar-powered radio, both later identified as the property of the deceased, Yahaya Issah.

Another search at Mahama Lamin’s hideout—an isolated container—led to the discovery of a sack containing meat, a specially designed cutlass, a bicycle, and a pickaxe handle, all confirmed to belong to the deceased.

At a press conference, the police revealed that on September 21, 2025, the deceased, Yahaya Issah, aged 55, was found dead in a motor mechanic shop at Dobile, near the Wa New Market. Upon inspection of the scene, police found a broken piece of a cement block stained with blood behind the shop. Investigations were immediately launched into the case.

In 2021, police recorded four murder cases in the region—at Kpaguri, Loho, Kambale, Mangu, and other areas in Kaleo and Loho.

Fast-forward to 2022, eleven more murder cases were recorded, all with a similar modus operandi. Interestingly, most of the victims were night watchmen who were attacked while on duty—either strangled to death or fatally struck on the head with blocks.

The police have appealed to the public to volunteer any information that could aid investigations or help prevent further criminal activities in the region.
