An 18-year-old man has allegedly killed his 90-year-old father and left his mother and sister-in-law seriously injured after a violent cutlass attack at Doba in the Kassena Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region.
The suspect, Atingane Nyaaba, is accused of attacking his father, Mr Nyaaba Apungo, at their home on February 15, 2026. Residents say the incident has left the quiet community in shock.
According to information gathered from the area, Atingane allegedly inflicted multiple cutlass wounds on his father, who died from the injuries.
He is also said to have turned the weapon on his mother, Mrs Atagewura, 60, and his sister-in-law, Anabel Zinge, 35. Both women sustained severe injuries and reportedly lost consciousness during the attack.
Witnesses described scenes of fear and confusion as neighbours rushed to the house after hearing screams. Some residents said the young man appeared agitated before the incident.
Sources in the community claim he had struggled with drug abuse for some time and had been unable to complete Senior High School as a result.
In what many have described as a disturbing moment, the suspect allegedly attempted to harm himself with the same cutlass but later stopped and fled into the bush.
Speaking to Word FM, DSP Lawrence Abaaduko Adombire of the Kassena Nankana Municipal Police Command confirmed the incident. He said the body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary.
DSP Abaaduko stated that the suspect is currently receiving treatment at the Navrongo War Memorial Hospital, alongside his injured mother and sister in law. All three are said to be responding to treatment.
He explained that investigators have not yet been able to take statements from the injured women because they were the only other people in the house at the time of the attack and remain under medical care.
Police say they are hopeful the two women will recover enough to provide a detailed account of what happened.
While suspected drug use is believed to have contributed to the violence, the exact motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
