Unfinished projects becoming haven for criminals – Techiman South MP

The Member of Parliament for Techiman South and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Works and Housing Committee, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, has raised concerns over the increasing use of abandoned building projects as hideouts for criminals.

According to the MP, many unfinished structures across the country have become operational bases for criminal activities, posing a threat to public safety.

Making an appearance on Metro TV’s Home Owners Show on Saturday, May 16, 2026, Adjei-Mensah Korsah attributed the growing number of abandoned projects partly to the high cost of foreign building materials.

He noted that many developers struggle to complete their projects because of the preference for imported construction materials over locally manufactured alternatives.

“People do not patronise local building materials. There’s always preference for foreign goods, including floor tiles, which are quite expensive compared to Ghana-made materials,” he said.

The Techiman South lawmaker encouraged Ghanaians to embrace locally produced building materials, describing them as more affordable and of good quality.

He further warned that prolonged abandonment of building projects leave such structures vulnerable to harsh weather conditions, which can weaken and eventually destroy them.

“When building projects are left unfinished for a very long time, the weather always has a negative impact on them and they collapse under the impact of the weather,” he stated.

Adjei-Mensah Korsah stressed that the stage at which projects are abandoned is particularly worrying, as partially completed structures often become unsafe and susceptible to misuse by criminals.
