University of Ghana guard arrested over viral assault video

A security guard at the University of Ghana has been arrested after a video showing him assaulting a man on campus spread widely online.

Police say Ebenezer Annor Darko, a member of the university’s Safety and Security Services Directorate, is in custody and assisting with investigations.

He was picked up by the Inspector General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team after footage appeared to show him beating, stomping and slapping a man.

The victim had been detained on suspicion of theft, according to the authorities.

In a statement, the University of Ghana said it had taken note of the video and had begun its own inquiry to establish what happened. It said the investigation would be conducted under its code of conduct for employees.

Police confirmed the arrest on Tuesday and said further updates would be provided as the investigation continues.

They also renewed a warning against mob justice, urging the public not to take the law into their own hands when dealing with suspected offenders.
