Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe, the Head of Public Relations and Strategy at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has announced that the FA decided against its contract with StarTimes due to their failure to meet specific contractual obligations.
In 2020, the Ghana FA entered into a four-year agreement with StarTimes, granting them exclusive broadcasting rights for the Ghana Premier League (GPL) and other leagues, valued at $5.25 million.
This deal concluded after the 2023/24 season, and while a new contract was anticipated, the FA decided against renewal. In an interview on Metro TV, Armstrong-Mortagbe explained that the decision stemmed from StarTimes’ inability to fulfill certain aspects of their contract.
“We had a paying partner, StarTimes, but the relationship has ended. There were outstanding elements that needed to be addressed, and since they were not resolved, the FA could not enter into an agreement with them when the league began. Until that agreement is finalized, we cannot continue with them; it’s a contractual issue,” he stated to Michael Kofi Oduro.
“To ensure fans could still enjoy the Ghana Premier League, the FA president initiated discussions with ExCo members and others to find new media partners within the Ghanaian media landscape.
“Initially, the coverage was not satisfactory, but improvements have been made. The main goal is to maximize viewership, which will help generate resources. Once we generate resources, the media partners will receive their share, with a portion allocated to the clubs providing the product,” he added.
Currently, the Premier League is being broadcasted by AFA TV, Metro TV, Original TV, Globe TV, and Net2 TV.
