UPDATE: Fire at Ritz Junction destroys shops but firefighters save 40 cars

A fire tore through parts of Ritz Junction near the Ashaley Botwe Taxi Station on Sunday afternoon, destroying several structures but sparing a mechanic workshop with dozens of vehicles, the Ghana National Fire Service has said.

The blaze, reported shortly after midday, spread quickly through a mix of wooden structures and metal containers used for both business and residential purposes. Firefighters managed to bring it under control after nearly two hours of intense work.

Crews from the Madina, Adenta and Legon fire stations were dispatched to the scene after the distress call came in at 12:08 p.m. The first team arrived within minutes and found the fire already well alight and advancing rapidly.

Firefighters worked to contain the flames, stopping them from reaching nearby properties. By 1:00 p.m., the fire had been confined, brought under control at 2:07 p.m., and finally extinguished at 2:40 p.m.

In all, 12 metal containers and 18 wooden structures were completely destroyed along with their contents. Despite the damage, crews were able to save a mechanic workshop housing 40 vehicles and 25 motorbikes, as well as 20 adjoining containers.

One firefighter sustained injuries during the operation and was taken to the Madina Community Clinic for treatment.

Fire officials say investigations are underway to determine the cause of the blaze. Senior officers from the various stations were on hand to support operations at the scene.
