UPSA female students battling depression over accommodation challenges – SRC Women’s Commissioner

The SRC Women’s Commissioner of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Priscilla Samari, has raised concerns over the growing mental health struggles among female students, attributing the situation to the lack of affordable accommodation.

According to her, many female students are increasingly prioritising the search for affordable housing over academic engagement due to the rising cost of accommodation.

During a submission on Metro TV’s Home Owners Show on Saturday, May 2, 2026, Ms. Samari revealed that recent price hikes in hostel and rental fees are taking a toll on students’ mental well-being.

She noted that several students are under intense pressure as they struggle to raise funds for accommodation, a situation she says is contributing to depression and anxiety among female students.

Ms. Samari further indicated that some students resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms, including engaging in risky behaviours, in a bid to finance their accommodation.

Touching on living conditions, she explained that overcrowding remains a major concern, with rooms designed for four occupants now accommodating as many as six to eight students.

This, she said, not only affects students’ privacy and comfort but also increases the risk of communicable diseases.

She added that the congested environment makes it difficult for students to relax and study effectively, further compounding their academic and emotional stress.
