US To Deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia To Ghana

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced its intention to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Ghana.

This decision follows a series of complex legal proceedings and a history of wrongful deportation that has made Garcia’s case one of the most contentious in recent immigration history.

Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran native, had been living in Maryland with his wife and children for several years before he was first detained by U.S. immigration authorities. Despite a 2019 court ruling that barred his deportation to El Salvador due to fears of persecution, Garcia was deported to the country in March 2023.

The deportation occurred in direct violation of the court order, sending him to the notorious CECOT mega-prison in El Salvador, where he was left in a precarious situation.

The Trump administration accused Garcia of being part of the MS-13 gang, a claim that his family and attorneys firmly deny. Despite the lack of clear evidence connecting him to the gang, Garcia was deported to El Salvador due to these accusations.

After his wrongful deportation to El Salvador, the DHS initially planned to send Garcia to Eswatini or Uganda, countries he has no known connection to. However, new developments have shifted the focus, with DHS now targeting Ghana as his next destination.

The reasoning behind this decision remains unclear, but it is part of the ongoing legal fight and the government’s broader push to deport individuals it deems to be threats to national security.

This Friday, Garcia’s attorneys will attend an evidentiary hearing in court, where government witnesses are expected to testify about the steps taken to facilitate his removal from the U.S.

Despite the agency’s claims, Garcia’s legal team argues that the deportation to Ghana is just another in a long line of unlawful actions taken against him.
