President John Dramani Mahama has warned that USAID’s sudden 90-day pause in services poses a great threat to Ghana’s healthcare sector, risking devastating consequences if urgent intervention is not taken.
President Mahama cautioned in his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
He explained that the pause would affect critical programmes, including the delivery of medical commodities to regional medical stores and health facilities in the Upper West, Upper East, Northern, and Savannah regions.
Additionally, USAID’s support for the National HIV/AIDS Control Programme, including the supply of antiretroviral therapies (ARTs) in the Western, Western North, and Ahafo Regions, is also under threat.
Mahama revealed that approximately $78 million earmarked for malaria, maternal and child health, nutrition, and HIV/AIDS programmes is at risk due to the withdrawal.
To mitigate this loss, President Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance to make immediate financial arrangements, which will be reflected in the upcoming budget presentation next month.
