Tourism Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie has called for a faster digital transformation of Ghana’s tourism sector, urging industry players to embrace artificial intelligence (AI), digital payments, social media and online booking platforms to make the country’s tourism destinations more visible and accessible.
Speaking at the 2026 World Tourism Day celebration in Koforidua, the Minister said Ghana must harness digital technology to better market its tourism attractions and turn the country’s rich cultural and natural assets into competitive tourism products.
She urged communities across the country to identify, celebrate and promote attractions within their localities, stressing that stronger community participation could help unlock new opportunities in the tourism sector.
Ms Gomashie also called for increased investment in digital skills, content creation, customer service and entrepreneurship, particularly among young people and women, as the sector adapts to changing consumer behaviour and technology.
She stressed that the growing use of AI must complement rather than replace human creativity, while ensuring that Ghana’s cultural identity, data and heritage are protected.
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), meanwhile, announced plans to strengthen enforcement of tourism licensing requirements and expand its digital services as part of efforts to improve compliance, safety and consumer protection.
The Minister urged tourism stakeholders to work together to ensure that digital innovation translates into tangible opportunities for local communities while strengthening the contribution of tourism to Ghana’s economy.
The push forms part of broader efforts to position Ghana’s tourism industry for a more digitally driven market, where visitors increasingly rely on online platforms to discover destinations, make bookings and access tourism services.
