UTAG suspends strike action against galamsey effective October 29

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike action against illegal mining (galamsey), effective Tuesday, October 29, 2024.

The National President Prof. Mamudu A. Akudugu and National Secretary Dr. Eliasu Mumuni, in a statement said the decision was made after “thorough deliberations” by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

UTAG initiated the strike on October 10, 2024, calling on the government to ban mining and prospecting for gold and other minerals in forest reserves, farms, and water bodies.

“The devastating effects of galamsey on our environment, particularly on water bodies, forest reserves, agricultural lands, and livelihoods, have been well-documented,” the statement noted.

As scholars and educators, UTAG believes it is their civic responsibility to ensure future generations inherit a sustainable and healthy environment.

During the strike, UTAG members demonstrated commitment through awareness campaigns, media engagement, and constructive dialogue.

The association also developed a Pact for Candidates of the 2024 Presidential Election to secure their commitment to fighting illegal mining activities.

“We have won the admiration and confidence of the Ghanaian people in us to always stand up for the welfare of our country,” the statement added.

The suspension is subject to affirmation or otherwise by UTAG members through a process facilitated by the National Independent Elections Committee (NIEC) by Monday, October 28, 2024.

UTAG expressed gratitude to its members and stakeholders for their support during the strike.

“Let us all remain vigilant and united in the pursuit of a sustainable future for Ghana,” the statement concluded.
