Vacant seats controversy: Franklin Cudjoe slams Supreme Court over ‘hypocrisy’ and ‘double standards’

Founding President and CEO of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has expressed outrage over the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on four parliamentary seats, citing hypocrisy and double standards.

Mr. Cudjoe in a Facebook post questioned the court’s swift decision to hear an ex-parte motion regarding the seats, while his own SALL case was dismissed and redirected to the High Court, where it was ultimately ruled that the court had no jurisdiction.

“The Supreme Court discarded us and dispatched us to the High Court to ‘try our luck’,” Cudjoe wrote.

“For four years, we have been rendered orphans and ostracised by the system, and yet we paid taxes, although we saw no development,” he noted.

The Supreme Court’s decision came after Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin sought to reverse a previous ruling blocking his declaration of the four seats as vacant.

Franklin Cudjoe’s SALL case, which aimed to protect the rights of disenfranchised constituents, was not given the same urgency.

“What was so special about the 4 constituencies whose MPs had abandoned in their hearts that the Supreme Court can even entertain the hearing of an ex-parte motion procured cheaply at the speed of light and rule on that?” Mr. Cudjoe asked.

He criticized the court’s focus on the MPs’ salaries and emoluments.

“This is just precocious judicial terrorism aided by legal plunder. Sad.”
