Vacant seats controversy: NDC and NPP MPs converge on majority side

An extraordinary scene is unfolding in Parliament today, with both National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) seated together on the majority side of the chamber.

This unusual alignment has left the minority seats eerily empty.

The calm atmosphere within the Accra Conference Centre, where Parliament is sitting, belies the tension that gripped the dome earlier.

Meanwhile, a heavy military presence sparked fear and panic among MPs, media personnel, and parliamentary staff.

However, as proceedings await commencement, MPs from both sides are now engaging in conversations, fostering a sense of unity.

This unexpected development comes amidst controversy surrounding four parliamentary seats declared vacant by Speaker Alban Bagbin on October 17, 2024. The Speaker’s decision was in response to a motion filed by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, citing constitutional requirements for MPs seeking re-election as independent candidates and an independent candidate contesting on the NPP ticket.
