Vanessa Edotom Boateng writes: The Assin Breku ticking time bomb

The residents of Assin Breku are facing a grave crisis due to a faulty high-voltage electric transformer installed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) near Ibrahim Maako Market. The transformer has allegedly been emitting high levels of radiation, resulting in severe health complications for the locals and the tragic death of 12 animals that grazed nearby. Despite repeated complaints to ECG over the past year, the company’s inaction has only exacerbated the situation, leaving the residents frustrated and fearful for their lives.

The proximity of the transformer to the Presbyterian Basic School is particularly alarming, as children often play in the area, unknowingly putting their lives at risk. The residents, led by Kofi Abankwah, have had enough and are now threatening to withhold electricity bill payments until the issue is resolved. This drastic measure underscores the desperation and urgency of the situation.

The current state of the Assin Breku transformer

The key concerns surrounding this issue are threefold. Firstly, the radiation exposure poses a significant threat to the health and well-being of the residents. Prolonged exposure can lead to severe health complications, including cancer and other debilitating diseases. Secondly, the safety risk associated with the transformer’s proximity to the school is alarming. The lives of innocent children are being put in jeopardy, and it is only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs. Lastly, ECG’s lack of action despite repeated complaints is unacceptable and demonstrates a blatant disregard for the welfare of the residents.

The residents of Assin Breku are demanding immediate attention from ECG to address this critical issue. The company must take swift action to relocate or repair the faulty transformer, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. Anything less would be unacceptable.

In conclusion, the situation in Assin Breku is a ticking time bomb, waiting to unleash devastating consequences. ECG must take responsibility and act promptly to prevent further harm. The residents’ call to action is a desperate cry for help, and it is imperative that their pleas are heard and heeded. The lives of innocent people, especially children, hang in the balance, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their safety.
