A communication member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe has divulged that the 2025/26 football season will mark the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in Ghanaian football.
According to Armstrong-Mortagbe, officiating is a significant challenge facing Ghanaian football, and the association aims to enhance officiating by implementing VAR.
“Part of fixing the fundamentals is improving officiating. While we are running capacity-building programs for the referees, we recognized that there is technology deployed elsewhere that has its challenges in terms of implementation,” he told Michael Kofi Oduro on Metro TV Ghana.
“However, based on our observations, VAR typically improves the level of refereeing, so in the wisdom of the Executive Council, we decided to implement it.”
“Last week, we had a FIFA kickoff team with the FOFA VAR team, which educated our VAR team on the prerequisites and the process for implementing VAR locally,” he added.
Armstrong-Mortagbe stated that the FA plans to start using VAR at the beginning of the 2025/26 season. He also mentioned that the technology will be piloted and tested during the final of this season’s MTN FA Cup.
