The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that all identified discrepancies are being corrected and that the register is “almost near perfect.”
The Commission also assured stakeholders that it is committed to providing a robust and credible voter register for the 2024 general election.
Addressing concerns raised by the NDC regarding discrepancies in the provisional voter register, the EC said their grievances would “warrant the Electoral Commission to accept the forensic audit of the whole test register to assuage the fears of stakeholders.
However, the commission noted that a forensic audit is not necessary at this time, as the exhibition exercise is an audit in itself.
“The exhibition offers an avenue for the auditing of the register, identifies discrepancies, and allows for prescribed legal processes to correct the discrepancies,” the EC explained.
The commission also highlighted its four-pronged approach to resolving discrepancies in the provisional voter register, which involves district electoral officers, exhibition officers, IT staff, and voters themselves.
The commission also requested a copy of the discrepancies identified by the NDC, which has not been provided.
“We entreat the NDC to trust us to correct discrepancies in the provisional voters register,” the EC said.
“The commission would like to assure the general public and all stakeholders that all identified discrepancies with the provisional voters register are being corrected.”
The EC also urged the NDC to submit details of the discrepancies they have identified to enable the commission to investigate and provide a report.
“Why are they refusing to submit the data to enable the EC to investigate and provide a report?” the commission asked.
The EC believes that the best way to ascertain the credibility and integrity of the 2024 voter register is through discussion, not demonstrations.
“Taking to the streets will not ensure a credible register. It will only cause tensions and suspicions which are unwarranted,” the commission said.
The EC has assured the NDC of a transparent process that will demonstrate to them that all their concerns have been resolved.
“We are confident that the former president will heed to our calls and do everything in his power to bring his party to the discussion table,” the commission said.
