The Chairman of the Legal and Student Committee of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Noah Osei Asenso has made a bold assertion that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) should be held accountable for examination malpractices, rather than students.
His remarks come in response to WAEC’s claims regarding the integrity of examination results and widespread cheating among candidates.
Asenso questioned the credibility of WAEC’s allegations against students, highlighting that the same council is responsible for appointing supervisors and invigilators to oversee the examination process.
“There is no one who is resisting any credible results as claimed by WAEC,” he stated. “If I may ask, aren’t the same WAEC people who take supervisors and invigilators to supervise the exams? So why should we blame students for copying?”
Asenso emphasized that the primary responsibility for ensuring a fair examination environment lies with WAEC. He criticized the council for not implementing effective supervision and urged them to develop better strategies to prevent malpractice. “WAEC should rather have a good way of supervising,” he asserted.
Furthermore, Asenso pointed out the necessity for WAEC to adapt to the technological advancements of the modern world. “We are in a technology world,” he remarked, calling on the council to plan properly and utilize technology as a means to combat examination malpractice.
He said by incorporating innovative solutions, WAEC could create a more secure examination process, thereby enhancing the credibility of their results.
Mr. Asenso’s comments shed light on the pressing need for WAEC to reevaluate its practices and take proactive measures to ensure that students are not unfairly blamed for systemic failures.
He said NUGS is advocating for a collaborative approach that prioritizes fairness, accountability, and the effective use of technology in the examination process.
He made this known during a telephone conversation with Kwaku Owusu Agyei on Adwenekasa on Original FM/TV.
