The West Africa People’s Organisation (WAPO) has congratulated Ghanaians on the country’s successful democratic transition over the past two months.
In a statement, WAPO’s Coordinating Council noted that the outcome of the December 7 election signifies a broader rejection of intensified exploitation and increasing repressiveness of Western neo-colonial domination.
According to WAPO, this wave of change is sweeping across West Africa, driven by the urgent activism of women and youth. “The wind of change is blowing in West Africa again, and Ghana, as always, participates fully in West Africa’s history,” the statement said.
WAPO commended the Ghanaian people for their restraint and vigilance in the face of right-wing political forces. The organisation also praised President John Mahama’s government for disrupting imperialism’s efforts to isolate African countries and re-establish constructive relations across the subregion.
“The applause the Burkinabe leader received at Ghana’s Black Star Square should be an important warning to the political elites in all our countries,” WAPO noted.
The organisation further encouraged Ghana’s efforts to establish a planned integrated national economy through its “24 Hour” economy programme. “Planning is the only path forward for development in Africa,” WAPO emphasized.
However, WAPO cautioned that Ghana’s new government faces significant challenges, including an “almost impossible financial mess” inherited from the previous administration.
The organisation urged Ghana to reject foreign troops on its soil and instead pursue a path of planned integrated and popular mobilisation.
“We must reject foreign troops on our soil. Period,” WAPO stressed.
