WASCAL to host Africa’s first international conference on Just Energy Transition in Abuja

The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) is taking a bold step in advancing Africa’s climate agenda with the launch of the International Conference on Climate Change and Just Energy Transition (I3C-JET), scheduled for October 22–24, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria.

The three-day event is expected to bring together a wide range of stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers, innovators, financiers, indigenous leaders, storytellers, and development partners, to chart a united path toward a just and sustainable energy future for Africa.

According to WASCAL, the conference aims to “bridge science, policy, and practice to accelerate a just and sustainable energy transition in Africa,” while showcasing effective policy frameworks and financing models shaping the region’s energy future.

WASCAL’s Executive Director, Professor Emmanuel Wendsongré Ramdé, said the conference is designed around inclusivity and innovation, emphasizing that no one should be left behind in the continent’s energy transformation.

“At the heart of this conference is inclusivity,” he said.

“This flagship platform will promote approaches that empower women, youth, and marginalised communities, ensuring that the energy transition truly leaves no one behind. It marks a defining step in shaping Africa’s journey towards climate resilience, and we are deeply inspired by the possibilities it brings.”

Participants will explore how scientific research can complement indigenous knowledge systems to develop practical, locally driven solutions in agriculture, water management, renewable energy, and disaster preparedness.

The event will also highlight South-South and Triangular Cooperation, creating a bridge between African nations and other regions of the Global South to encourage shared learning and innovation. Organisers say the conference will help define West Africa’s position ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil, as countries prepare to accelerate progress toward the 2030 global sustainability goals.

With delegates expected from over 20 countries, I3C-JET 2025 will underline West Africa’s growing leadership in advancing climate resilience and promoting a fair, inclusive transition to clean energy.

Headquartered in Accra, Ghana, WASCAL is an intergovernmental organisation operating in 12 West African countries with a mandate to combat climate change and improve livelihoods. It is widely known for its graduate scholarship programmes, applied research projects, and climate data services, all aimed at equipping the next generation of African scientists and policymakers to drive sustainable development across the region.
