The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says 14 persons have so far been arrested across the country for alleged involvement in examination malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The suspects include teachers, students, and invigilators, who were picked up at Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College at Asante Bekwai, Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian Senior High School, and other centres.
Mr. John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, told journalists that the number of arrests is expected to increase as investigations continue.
He said candidates from schools where malpractices had been detected would have their scripts thoroughly scrutinised before results are released.
Mr. Kapi disclosed that the Adventist Day Senior High School examination centre in Kumasi had been closed down after several mobile phones were seized from candidates.
The affected candidates have been relocated to the WAEC regional office to complete the examination under strict supervision.
He also cited several incidents, including the arrest of two impersonators at Kasoa who have since been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment each. An accomplice was handed an eight-month sentence.
In another case, the proprietor of Christian School in Kukurantumi and a teacher were arrested for allegedly creating a WhatsApp platform to distribute questions to candidates.
Additionally, one Ebenazer Fynn was arrested at Abura Dunkwa for impersonation and is currently under investigation.
Mr. Kapi reiterated WAEC’s commitment to protecting the credibility of the WASSCE and warned that the Council would apply the necessary sanctions to deter further malpractice.
