In a powerful display of environmental responsibility and teamwork, Commonwealth Sports Ghana and the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) joined forces on Sunday for a beach clean-up exercise at the Independence Square Beach in Accra.
The initiative formed part of the Commonwealth Clean Ocean Campaign, a global movement aimed at protecting marine life and promoting sustainable coastal environments across member nations.
Athletes, officials, and volunteers from various sporting disciplines rolled up their sleeves to collect plastics and debris washed ashore — a symbolic reminder of the growing threat of ocean pollution.
Speaking at the event, representatives from Commonwealth Sports Ghana emphasized that sports and environmental sustainability go hand in hand.
“The ocean connects us all, and as a sporting family, we have a duty to protect it for future generations,” a spokesperson said.
The clean-up also forms part of Ghana’s build-up to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where environmental consciousness is one of the campaign’s central themes.
The exercise highlighted the power of sports to drive social change and environmental awareness, reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to both athletic excellence and planetary health.
