We are laying the foundation for a new economy with One Million Coders programme – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), proclaiming it as the dawn of a new economic era for Ghana.

“We are not merely launching a programme,” he declared to a packed audience at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT.

“We are laying the foundation for a new economy.”

This flagship initiative, which forms a key pillar of the Reset Ghana Agenda, is designed to train one million Ghanaians in digital skills over four years — a direct response to the digital skills gap affecting youth and national competitiveness.

President Mahama’s speech emphasized the strategic intent behind the programme.

“These are not just technical abilities; they are economic passports—pathways to decent jobs, entrepreneurship, and long-term socio-economic inclusion,” he said.

As he positioned Ghana to become a continental leader in digital innovation, Mahama highlighted examples from Estonia, the UK, Finland, and Japan—nations that have embraced coding education to power economic transformation.

“These are not just anecdotes. These are blueprints—and we are adapting the best of them to the Ghanaian context.”
