‘We are not involved in illegal mining’ – Zoomlion Ghana Limited

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has issued a public disclaimer distancing itself from illegal mining activities, popularly known as “galamsey”, after some equipment bearing the name ‘Zoomlion’ was reportedly found being used in such operations.

“Zoomlion Ghana Limited is not engaged in, does not support, and has never participated in any illegal mining activity, including galamsey,” Zoomlion Ghana Limited said in a statement.

The company explained that the equipment in question was manufactured by Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science & Technology Co., Ltd., a Chinese company that is “entirely independent of and unaffiliated with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.”

“We wish to unequivocally state that … the company does not own, operate, lease, or authorize the use of any equipment for mining purposes,” the statement read.

The company has urged the public, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities to disregard any misrepresentation or unauthorized use of its name.

“We strongly distance ourselves from any such activities and any entities or individuals purporting an association in that regard,” the statement added.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s disclaimer comes amid concerns over the proliferation of illegal mining activities in the country, which have been linked to environmental degradation and other social ills.

The company has assured the public that it will continue to uphold its corporate social responsibilities and contribute to the development of Ghana.
