Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has admitted that Ghana’s leaders have failed to safeguard public funds and ensure accountability within state institutions.
Appearing before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee on Monday, November 3, 2025, Mr. Iddrisu said taxpayers have not been treated fairly and that public officials have neglected their duty to protect national resources.
“We have failed to protect the public purse and hold state institutions accountable for financial irregularities. Sovereignty resides in the people,” he said, expressing disappointment at what he described as widespread lapses in accountability at every level of governance.
He reminded the Committee of Article 187(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires Parliament to debate the Auditor General’s findings and take action in the public interest.
Mr. Iddrisu’s comments struck a chord with many observers who see persistent financial mismanagement as one of the country’s biggest governance challenges.
The Minister also cautioned heads of public schools against charging unapproved fees, warning that those involved would face serious sanctions.
He urged the Ministry of Finance to release funds on time to ensure the smooth implementation of the Free Tertiary Education Policy.
The Public Accounts Committee’s sittings continue this week, with other ministers, including Communications Minister Sam George, also appearing to respond to audit queries from their respective sectors.
