Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, has charged the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region to take seriously the clean-up exercise currently ongoing.
According to him, the exercise, which is part of the government’s effort to make Accra one of the cleanest cities in Africa, needs the collective effort of all stakeholders to succeed.
“So far, four MMDAs namely Accra Metropolitan, Korle Klottey Municipal, Ayawaso Central Municipal and Ablekuma Central Municipal Assemblies have organised the Homowo Clean-up exercise for the first phase of the assignment which ended on Saturday, the 13th of July, 2024,” he said.
The Regional Minister, who was addressing the first meeting of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council for the year 2024, noted that over 100 tonnes of garbage, including silt and plastics, were evacuated and carted to various final disposal sites during the exercise.
He also revealed that the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) is mobilizing streetlights to be distributed to the MMDAs to fix them at vantage points in the various communities and streets to improve security at night.
“We are also following up vehemently with the Highways Authority and other agencies to get most of the defunct traffic lights fixed,” he added.
The Regional Minister further charged the MMDAs to take keen interest in the ecologically sensitive zones in their areas to promote sustainable development.
“We must show clear focus and direction as leaders at the lower level and engage our stakeholders in our actions and activities. We must put forth a front foot to indiscipline situations. We must win the sanitation war, by sustaining the gains and building on the blocks already laid,” he said.
