We need a two-year National Service with the military – Kojo Bonsu

A flagbearer hopeful of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says there is a need for graduates to do a two-year National Service with the military.

Kojo Bonsu said proceeding on this tangent will inculcate discipline in Ghanaian youths by instilling in them a tradition of industry at work, and of patriotic and loyal service to Ghana in any situation they may find themselves.

The National Service programme is a compulsory one-year service required of all citizens of Ghana who are 18 years and above, at the time of deployment.

The Scheme which started in 1973 now operates under Act 426 (of 1980).

However, the former mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly wants an extension to two years.

Speaking to Annie Afua Ampofo on Good Afternoon Ghana on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, Mr. Bonsu also suggests posting a mandatory two-year service with the military – something similar to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Nigeria.

“This country, needs to change for the better, and we have to make sure people are responsible for the work they do,” he stated.
