We need to privatize road construction – Nana Akomea

Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, is advocating for road construction privatization.

He said roads can be built by the private sector and tolled.

This comes after the chaos caused by the Kasoa-Winneba highway expansion project which has prompted calls for a change in approach to road construction.

The highway’s disruption, caused by the diversion of the Ayensu River as part of the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway project, has highlighted the need for a new approach.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, the Managing Editor of the State Transport Corporation, Nana Akomea noted that the about $180m project, funded by the government of Ghana, has been plagued by delays and inefficiencies.

He cited Vice President Dr. Bawumia’s “new thinking” on road construction, emphasizing the need for private sector involvement.

“This road, being a highly commercial road, can be built by the private sector and tolled, so it doesn’t become a burden on the state or public coffers,” Akomea said.

“We need new thinking. This road being such a highly commercial road can be built by the private sector and tolled, so it doesn’t become a burden on the state, on the public coffers because the public coffers is not able to bear this kind of construction.” Nana Akomea added.
