“We Will Work Together Towards A Common Goal” – GOC President Akpokavie Assures

The newly elected President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr. Richard Akpokavie, has assured the sporting community of a united and inclusive leadership aimed at supporting all sports federations under the Olympic umbrella.

Speaking in an interview with Gideon Okyere Anim(Gattuso) on Original TV, Mr. Akpokavie emphasized that his leadership will focus on collaboration, transparency, and achieving shared goals across Ghana’s sporting ecosystem.

“My leadership will be uniting as a team to support the federation, working together towards a common goal,” Mr. Akpokavie declared.

Akpokavie, who previously served as the Secretary General of the GOC, said his experience has taught him the importance of consensus-building and backing individual sports federations, many of which face limited resources and logistical challenges.

He stressed that the success of Team Ghana at international competitions — such as the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and African Games — hinges on genuine cooperation between the GOC, national federations, and government agencies.

Sports stakeholders have widely welcomed his election, expressing hope that his tenure will usher in a new era of strategic leadership, equitable support, and accountability within Ghana’s Olympic movement.

As the countdown begins to the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, the GOC under Akpokavie’s leadership is expected to roll out new initiatives to improve athlete preparation, infrastructure, and federation coordination.

Mr. Akpokavie succeeds Ben Nunoo Mensah and brings decades of legal and sports administration experience to the role.
