We’ll support James Quayson to reclaim Assin North seat – Lawyer Stephen Bennie

The embattled James Gyakye Quayson would receive backing from the National Democratic Congress to win the Assin North  bye-election, according to former NDC secretary for the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Constituency, Lawyer Stephen Kingsley Bennie.

He claims that in a by-election, the party will support Mr. Quayson.

“NDC is not scared we are going to support James Gyakye Quayson and make sure we win the Assin North seat with huge margin so NPP should forget about the seat,” Lawyer Stephen Kingsley Bennie  exclusively told Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Adwenekasa on Accra-based Original FM 91.9.

“We in the NDC are prepared for this election. We began our preparation even as we were in Kumawu. We will do our review meetings and we will take over Assin North. We knew that we would go into a by-election and so the party has already put processes in place,” he said.

He also believes the controversy surrounding Gyakye Quayson’s subsequent exit may favour the party.

Background

The Supreme Court has by unanimous decision ordered Parliament to expunge the name of James Gyakye Quayson as a Member of Parliament.

The Court on, Wednesday, 17 May 2023, declared as unconstitutional the election of Mr Gyakye Quayson as MP for Assin North saying he held dual citizenship as at the time he filed to contest the 2020 elections

A resident of Assin Bereku in the Central region, Michael Ankomah Nimfa dragged Mr Quayson to the court to restrain him from holding himself as MP after a Cape Coast High Court in July 2021 annulled his election as Assin North MP.
