Western Region bans vegetable sales amid Cholera outbreak

The Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) has announced an immediate ban on the sale of vegetables by food vendors in the region, following a cholera outbreak that has claimed eight lives and infected 789 people as of December 7, 2024.

The ban, which was announced in a press statement, aims to curb the spread of the disease, which has been linked to contaminated vegetables sold by food vendors.

“Environmental Surveillance investigations reveal that 96% of infections are linked to food vendors, particularly through the sale of contaminated vegetables such as salads, leaves and green peppers,” the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) stated in a statement.

The WRCC has warned that offenders will face prosecution in accordance with the Public Health Act, 2012, Act 851.

The ban will remain in place until public health officials confirm the safety of such practices.

The general public has been strongly advised to avoid purchasing or consuming vegetables from food vendors for their safety.

“Meanwhile, vegetables purchased for domestic use should be treated properly before use,” the statement added.

The cholera outbreak has been concentrated in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan and Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal areas, which account for 95% of infections.

Daily reported cases exceed 60, prompting the WRCC to take urgent measures to address the situation.
