The Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North and former Deputy Minister for Energy, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has expressed strong disapproval of the newly introduced fuel levy by the National Democratic Congress (NDC)-led government, accusing the party of reneging on campaign promises.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana program with host Moro Awudu, Adomako-Mensah questioned why the NDC, which campaigned vigorously against tax increases during the 2024 election, has now introduced a fuel levy that threatens to burden ordinary Ghanaians.
“During the campaign, the NDC was against raising taxes. So, after winning power, why are they now bringing in this fuel levy?” he asked.
The MP alleged that the NDC used the E-Levy and other taxes as political tools to win votes, only to reverse course once in government. He warned that the new fuel levy would have a far more severe financial impact on Ghanaians.
“The Finance Minister is not being truthful. What he said in opposition is different from what he says in government. After abolishing the E-Levy and betting taxes, they are now trying to find other ways to generate revenue,” Adomako-Mensah added.
He highlighted that the E-Levy had generated GH₵2.1 billion in 2024, whereas the newly introduced fuel levy is expected to raise GH₵5.4 billion—more than double the revenue from the E-Levy.
The MP’s comments underscore ongoing political tensions surrounding the government’s fiscal policies, especially amid public concerns about rising living costs and inflation.
