Three journalists have been assaulted in the Effutu Constituency by individuals believed to be supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), after reporting on the rejection of President John Dramani Mahama’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Abraham Henry Arthur.
The incident occurred shortly after Assembly Members failed to confirm the nominee, with only 9 out of 26 members voting in his favour which is below the two-thirds majority required.
Eric Owusu Amponsah of Bryt FM, Kwaku Mireku Nyampong of Obaatanpa Radio and Kessben TV, and other media personnel were attacked while leaving the premises after covering the story. Report indicates that their mobile phones and a digital watch were stolen during the assault.
According to the victims, the attackers appeared to be angered by their factual reporting of the vote outcome.
“We only reported the results of the ballot. It’s disturbing that we were attacked just for doing our job,” one of the journalists said.
A complaint has been filed with the Winneba Police Command, and an investigation has been launched.
The journalists are calling for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and stronger protection for media workers.
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and other media rights groups have condemned the attack, urging authorities to act swiftly to safeguard press freedom and hold those responsible accountable.
