The headmaster of Kojina ‘A’ Anglican Basic School says a severe shortage of desks is forcing children to bring kitchen stools from home and driving many families to withdraw their wards.
Mr Abdulai, in an interview, said the lack of desks has become the school’s biggest challenge.
He revealed that the school’s enrolment has dropped sharply from 472 pupils to just 275 because many families can no longer cope with the situation.
“Many of our children have to carry kitchen stools and small tables from their homes just so they can sit and learn. It breaks my heart because some parents are pulling their children out altogether,” he said.
Assembly Member for the Kojina electoral area, Hon. Addae Frank, confirmed he is aware of the school’s plight.
He pointed out that the community has been trying to fix some of the problems, including screeding the classrooms and replacing leaking roofs. But the desks deficit remains dire.
Hon. Addae said that in some classes, three or four pupils are forced to share a single desk. He added that the school often has to close early when rain threatens because the classrooms’ old roofs cannot keep out water.
“This situation is discouraging parents. If we do not get support soon, we may lose more pupils and the school may collapse altogether,” he warned.
He called on government officials, former students, and all well-meaning individuals to come to the school’s aid before it is too late.
