The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi could finally be released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) today, Monday, June 2, 2025.
Despite being granted bail last week, Wontumi remains in custody due to procedural setbacks in fulfilling the bail conditions.
His lawyer, Hon. Andy Appiah-Kubi, expressed confidence that the remaining legal hurdles would be cleared today, paving the way for his client’s release. Speaking to reporters, Appiah-Kubi said, “We encountered some difficulties which will be sorted on Monday, then we will have a fresh slate to operate, and work towards the desired result.”
Wontumi has been in EOCO custody since May 28, after being implicated in a series of alleged financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
He was granted a GHC50 million bail with two justified sureties on the same day, but delays in processing the sureties and related documentation stalled his release, despite reportedly fulfilling the bail terms by May 30.
Appiah-Kubi maintained that the legal team is working tirelessly to ensure Chairman Wontumi’s bail takes effect today, adding that no new charges have been added since the initial arrest.
The case has sparked public interest, especially within political circles, as Wontumi is a high-profile figure in the ruling NPP. His continued detention has raised questions, but his legal team remains optimistic about a resolution.
Chairman Wontumi’s supporters and legal representatives are hopeful that today will mark the end of his five-day stay in EOCO custody.
