Bosnia and Herzegovina strengthened their chances of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing an impressive 3-1 victory over Qatar in their final Group B fixture in Seattle.
The result lifts the Dragons to four points and leaves them well placed in the race to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. For Qatar, however, the defeat confirms another group-stage exit, repeating their disappointing campaign at the 2022 World Cup.
Bosnia seized control from the opening whistle and were rewarded for their attacking intent midway through the first half. Teenage sensation Kerim Alajbegovic announced himself on the world stage with a stunning long-range strike after weaving past two defenders before unleashing an unstoppable effort beyond goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada.
The goal made the 18-year-old Bosnia’s youngest-ever World Cup scorer and sparked jubilant celebrations among his teammates.
The Europeans doubled their advantage just five minutes later with veteran captain Edin Dzeko at the heart of the move. The 40-year-old’s effort took successive deflections off defender Homam Ahmed and goalkeeper Abunada before ending up in the net for an unfortunate own goal.
Dzeko, making his 150th international appearance, continued to torment the Qatari defence and came close to adding a third when his shot beat Abunada but struck the post.
Despite Bosnia’s dominance, Qatar found a way back into the contest before halftime. Hassan Al-Haydos, the country’s most-capped player, reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute with a composed finish after Bosnia failed to clear their lines.
The goal injected fresh belief into the Asian side, who nearly drew level in first-half stoppage time when Pedro Miguel’s effort rattled the far post.
Qatar’s hopes suffered a significant setback shortly after the break when Al-Haydos was forced off injured. The 35-year-old left the field visibly emotional, potentially bringing the curtain down on a distinguished international career.
As the match entered its closing stages, Bosnia regained control and finally put the result beyond doubt. Ermin Mahmic continued his fine tournament form by scoring for the second consecutive game, stabbing home from close range in the 80th minute.
The midfielder celebrated wildly by removing his shirt, earning a yellow card but little concern as Bosnia’s supporters celebrated a crucial victory.
With their group-stage campaign now complete, Bosnia must wait to discover whether four points will be enough to secure a place in the last 32. Qatar, meanwhile, head home after another disappointing World Cup journey, having failed to progress beyond the opening round.
