Youth Empowerment for Life (YEFL) Ghana has commended President John Dramani Mahama for establishing a ministry dedicated to youth development and empowerment.
According to Jawol Vera Magan, Executive Director of YEFL Ghana, this move will make it easier to coordinate youth activities, leading to holistic youth development.
“We are hopeful that government will show much greater commitment towards youth development,” Magan said, expressing her optimism about the new ministry.
“We expect to experience and see a clear departure from the practice of pseudo cosmetic youth empowerment interventions clothed with beautiful names but with less resource commitment.”
YEFL Ghana noted that the previous Ministry of Youth and Sports had underfunded youth development, allocating only 2% of its budget to youth services, while 41% went to compensation and administration.
The organization also highlighted the misallocation of funds by the National Youth Authority, which directed substantial funds towards sports infrastructural development instead of youth-focused initiatives.
To address these challenges, YEFL Ghana emphasized the need for a multi-dimensional approach involving coordinated efforts from the government, private sector, civil society, and development partners.
“Investing in the youth of Ghana is not only a matter of social responsibility but also a strategic imperative for sustainable development, economic growth, and overall progress of the nation,” Madam Jawol Vera Magan stressed.
YEFL Ghana pledged its support to the new ministry, offering its expertise and knowledge to ensure the ministry’s success.
The organization also called on other stakeholders to support the ministry in its efforts to empower Ghana’s youth .
