Youth Minister urges responsible Valentine celebrations, warns against drugs and risky behaviour

The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment has called on young people across Ghana to celebrate Valentine’s Day responsibly, cautioning against drug abuse and risky sexual behaviour that could jeopardise their future.

In a press release issued on Friday, February 13, 2026, the ministry said Valentine’s Day should be used as an opportunity to reflect on “the values of respect, responsibility and care for one another.”

“The Hon. Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment encourages the youth to celebrate Valentine’s Day in ways that would uplift and empower them while avoiding choices that could endanger their health and future,” the statement noted.

The minister warned that substance abuse remains a major threat to young people’s development and ambitions.

“Drugs and substance abuse not only harms the body and mind, but also undermines the aspirations of young people who are destined to be the future leaders of the nation,” the release stated.

He also expressed concern about what he described as worrying trends among the youth.

“The growing concerns of teenage pregnancies and the rising number of HIV infections among the youth are alarming, posing serious threats to their health, education, and future opportunities,” the minister said, adding that “these challenges require urgent collective action.”

Urging young people to prioritise their wellbeing, the minister stressed that Valentine’s Day should not be used as an excuse for irresponsible behaviour.

“Valentine’s Day should be a celebration of love that builds, not destroys. I urge our youth to cherish themselves, respect themselves, respect their bodies, and commit to choices that secure their future,” he said.

He further appealed for discipline and mutual support among young people.

“Let us use this day to affirm our dedication to living responsibly, supporting one another, and building a generation that is strong, disciplined and ready to lead Ghana into greatness,” the statement quoted the minister as saying.

In a specific caution, he added: “Let us also distinguish this day as a day free of substance abuse including alcohol… let us remember not to offer sex as a gift on this day but offer chocolate to a loved one.”

The ministry also called on parents, teachers, and community leaders to play active roles in guiding the youth.

“The role of families, schools and communities is critical in shaping the values and decisions of young people, especially at a time when they are exposed to increasing social pressures,” the release said.
