Agalga calls for parliamentary debate on IGP’s leaked tape report

Ranking Member on Defence and Interior Committee and Member of Parliament for Builsa North, Mr James Agalga, has called on Parliament to debate the report on the alleged leaked tape involving the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

According to him, the Committee has completed its investigations and submitted its report, which is yet to be laid before the House for discussion.

Mr Agalga appealed to the Leadership of the Business Committee to programme the report for debate, to allow Members to contribute and discuss the matter.

Background

A leaked tape exposed an alleged plot by three police officers – COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi – in collaboration with former Northern Regional NPP Chairman Daniel Bugri Naabu, to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

The alleged plot aimed to pave the way for the governing NPP’s victory in the 2024 general elections.

In response, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, set up a seven-member committee chaired by Samuel Atta Akyea to investigate the tape’s contents and implications.

The committee was tasked with uncovering the truth behind the alleged plot and was expected to submit its findings by September 10, 2023.
