BECE 2024: Gov’t has only paid GH¢47m, not GH¢80m – WAEC

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has contradicted claims by the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, that the Finance Ministry had released GH¢80 million for the conduct of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

According to WAEC, the actual amount received from the government is GH¢47 million, which is only half of the total amount owed to the examination body.

In an interview with Citi FM, John Kapi, Head of Public Relations at WAEC, clarified that the council had only received GH¢2.3 million initially, with an additional GH¢47.1 million warrant received on Friday afternoon.

“We were expecting them to pay a balance of GH¢93,552,688 to us to enable us to conduct the examination,” Kapi stated.

The BECE is scheduled to take place from July 8 to July 15, 2024, across all centers in the country.

WAEC had earlier requested at least 50% of the total amount to conduct the examination and additional funds to process and release the results.

The development comes after concerns were raised by Yusif Sulemana, Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, regarding the government’s outstanding debt to WAEC.
