Dr. Eric Nkansah replaces Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa as GES DG

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appointed Dr. Eric Nkansah as Acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

His appointment follows the dismissal of Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa on Tuesday, October 17, 2022.

A letter dated October 19, 2022 reads, “pursuant to Section 19 (1), (2), (a) of the Pre-Tertiary Education Act, 2020 (Act 1049), I am pleased to inform you that, the President has appointed you to act as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service”.

On October 17, President Akufo-Addo asked Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa to step down as DG of the GES.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the needs that warranted his appointment to head the GES no longer exist.

“The Ministry of Education has informed this Office [of President] that the exigencies that required your skills and expertise as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service do not exist any longer. Moreover, the extension of your secondment by the 14th June, 2021 letter is in contravention of the Human Resource Policy Framework and Manual of the Public Services Commission, as it purports to extend your secondment beyond the 3-year maximum limit,” the president said in an October 17 statement.
