Family of man tortured by Fire Service Personnel demands justice

The family of a 27-year-old man Shirazu Nuhu aka Mallam in the Savannah Region are demanding for justice after he was tortured by two personnel of the National Fire Service in the West Gonja Municipality.

According to the family, the action of the fire service officers inflicted on the victim constitute an act of barbarism.

Eyewitnesses said two personnel of the National Fire Service and their accomplices on the run on December 9 at 4 pm apprehended Shirazu and accused him of the theft of their 10 inch high density mattress.

According to the eyewitnesses, the suspects took the laws into their own hands and tortured him to confess to the crime despite several pleas to send him to the police station.

The victim subsequently passed away on December 13 with traces of burn scars and scalds on his body.

Alarmed by this finding, the family contacted the police and the corpse was sent to the St Anne’s Hospital for autopsy.

The police in Damongo apprehended the two fire officers after the autopsy report while others are said to be on the run.

Zakaria Mudasir, a brother of the deceased who spoke on behalf of the family called on the police to open thorough investigation into the matter.

He also urged both traditional rulers and political leaders to refrain from interfering in the matter to allow the police to carry out their investigations to unravel the cause of the death.

However, the Ghana Police Service have withheld the names of the suspects and are yet to charge them.
