‘I was misconstrued’– Bagbin clarifies 2024 elections a “Mahama, Bawumia contest” comment

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has moved to clarify his comment that the 2024 elections will be a contest between Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former President John Dramani Mahama.

According to Mr. Bagbin, his comment was taken out of context in the media and that he was not predicting a contest between the likely frontiers of the two major political parties when he called on the Yagbonwura in Damongo.

The Third Gentleman of the Land explains in a press statement issued on Thursday, June 15, 2023, that he was emphasizing on the fact that Northern Ghana will be “well represented at the apex of Ghana’s political structure, and that should be a source of pride to them”

“The attention of Parliament has been drawn to a report by Citifmonline that the Rt. Hon. Speaker has predicted that the 2024 presidential elections will be between the former president, John Mahama, and the Vice President, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.”

“The Speaker is reported to have said this when he called on the Yagbonwura in Damongo as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of uninterrupted parliamentary democracy in Ghana.”

“We wish to place on record that although the Speaker made reference to the two politicians at the said event, it was not an exercise in prediction.”

“He suggested that what should be of interest to the people in northern Ghana, in which context he was speaking, is that they will be well represented at the apex of Ghana’s political structure, and that should be a source of pride to them.”

“The Rt. Hon. Speaker explained that despite political differences, we are one people with a common destiny. Our common goal therefore should be to work towards the common good of all Ghanaians, irrespective of our political differences.”

Former President John Dramani Mahama emerged as the winner of presidential primary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He polled 297,603 votes representing 98.9 per cent.

Meanwhile, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is yet to elect a flagbearer although many pollsters and political analysts have predicted a tough contest between the major aspirants Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, the former Trade’s minister and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of Ghana.
