Inusah Fuseini supports amendment to Article 112(6) to curb wasteful by-elections

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and legal practitioner, Inusah Fuseini, has thrown his weight behind the proposal to amend Article 112(6) of the 1992 Constitution.

“The recent development in our political landscape, particularly, the use of money in the political landscape, I will say what Professor Kweku Asare is proposing is quite reasonable”

Alhaji Fuseini’s support for the amendment comes after Professor Asare proposed that the article should be amended to read, “a by-election shall not be held in the year of a general election.”

The proposal aims to prevent the waste of resources on by-elections and ensure that constituencies are represented in Parliament.

This proposal has received strong backing from former Tamale Central legislature. In an interview on Metro TV, Alhaji Fuseini argued that the recent developments in Ghana’s political landscape, particularly the use of money in politics, make the proposal by Professor Kweku Asare reasonable.

He noted that the drafters of the Constitution considered it important for constituencies to have representation, but the current provision allows for people at Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lipke and Lolobi (SALL) to go without an MP for close to four years.

“If the drafters of the 1992 constitution think it is abominable for a constituency to be without a representation but SALL can be without an MP, for close to 4 years, I think the proposal to amend Article 112 clause 6 is in order,” he said.

Alhaji Fuseini believes that amending Article 112(6) to prevent by-elections in an election year is worth considering. While he acknowledges that it may not be the best solution, he thinks it’s a step in the right direction.

“I think there is need to look at that provision again. Although I am not saying it’s the best”
