Kejetia Market Fire: Tension brews over missing Dr. Bawumia cash donation

Tension is rising at Kejetia Market in Kumasi over an alleged missing cash donation from Vice President Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia to support fire victims.

The leaders of the Kejetia fire victims have expressed disappointment in Dr. Bawumia’s handlers and market management, calling on authorities, particularly NPP leadership, to act swiftly to avoid chaos.

On March 15, 2023, a fire destroyed properties and wares worth millions of cedis, leaving many victims distressed. Traders claim Dr. Bawumia donated GH¢200,000, but the money never reached them, allegedly seized by market queens.

The Combined Kejetia Traders Association’s General Secretary, Reuben Ameh, revealed that the Chief of Staff, Madam Akosua Fremah Osei Opare, intervened and donated GH¢300,000, but the market management refused to hand it over to the fire victims.

The traders are demanding the authorities ensure the fire victims receive the money and threatening action if the issue is not resolved promptly.

“We are disappointed in the management of the market, and we urge the NPP leadership to act swiftly to avoid chaos,” said Nathaniel Boampong, Leader of Kejetia Fire Victims.

The aggrieved traders have expressed their disappointment in the management of the market, calling for their sacking.
